Kansanvalistusseura, KVS Foundation, was founded in 1874. It is the oldest adult education organisation in Finland, with ideological roots in the very same national and cultural awakening which later led to Finland's national independence in 1917. Kansanvalistusseura was transformed into a foundation in the mid-1930s.
Today Kansanvalistusseura (KVS Foundation) is known for publications.
It published books on research, new information on experiences in education and learning, values and goals in educational work for professionals in adult education, teachers and facilitators, education officers and decision makers.
Yearbook of Adult Education, edited in co-operation with the Finnish Adult Education Research Society, has been published for nearly 40 years.
The Finnish quarterly Aikuiskasvatus (Adult Education) has been published since 1981.
LLinE – Lifelong Learning in Europe, a quarterly in English, published since 1996. The journal introduces European research, case studies and projects in adult education for the use of an international audience. LLinE is supported by an editorial board of internationally recognised experts and representatives of European umbrella organisations in adult and continuing education.
Kansanvalistusseura (KVS Foundation) owns and maintains the KVS Institute consisting of Oriveden Opisto and KVS Distance Education Institute. Oriveden Opisto is a folk high school (residential college) with creative writing, visual arts and music as main educational areas. KVS Distance Education Institute includes also The Comprehensive School for Finnish Children Abroad. Another task of Kansanvalistusseura (KVS Foundation) is education in foreign languages.
THE FINNISH ADULT EDUCATION RESEARCH SOCIETY AIKUISKOULUTUKSEN TUTKIMUSSEURA The Finnish Adult Education Research Society is a network of researchers and developers within the field of adult and continuing education in Finland. It has about 200 members who come from different parts of Finland representing both researchers and practitioners. The Society aims at promoting adult and continuing education research and innovations through publishing, organising seminars and conferences, and participating in public debate in the field. The Society functions through national and international partnerships with universities and adult education organisations.

The Finnish Adult Education Association is an umbrella organisation for non-formal adult education in Finland. Its member organisations are the Finnish Association of Adult Education Centres (the first was founded in Finland in 1899), the Finnish Folk High School Association (the first folk high school was established in Finland in 1889), the eleven organisations working in the field of liberal adult education which maintain Finland's eleven study circle centres (the first established in Finland in 1919), the KVS Foundation and the Swedish-speaking organisation Svenska Folkskolans Vänner.
FAEA's main interests lie in securing the working conditions of Adult Education through negotiations, initiatives and reports, public discussion, and active communicatio with the Ministry of Education on the future development of the field; International Contacts as a member and operator of the Information and Documentation Office of the European Association for the Education of Adults (EAEA). In the Nordic context FAEA works together with its sister organisations in Denmark, Norway and Sweden to engage in projects initiated by the Nordic Council and lately to expand cooperation with the Baltic states.
